YOU CAN HELP LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF SHIP QUILTS AND KITS TO THOSE IN NEED.
Because of the growing expense for shipping overseas, LWR has a fund that accepts donations to defray these costs. If you would like to make a donation, put your check (made payable to St. John's WELCA), or cash in an envelope, clearly marked LWR Shipping Fund. This can be placed in the offering plate or dropped off at the church office by May 15, 2011. St. John's WELCA will be matching funds donated up to $400.00, and will forward it to the LWR Quilt and Kit Shipping Fund. In 2010, St. John's sent 247 quilts, 171 school kits, 140 health kits, 109 layettes, and 76 sewing kits to LWR. These items alone cost LWR $1,383 to ship.

What about those stamps? Tubfrim is a humanitarian organization owned by the Norwegian Health Association. Tubfrim collects used postage stamps, packages them and sells them to wholesalers and philatelists world wide. When Tubfrim was founded in 1928, its objective was to finance tuberculosis research and to provide aid for children inflicted by the disease. For decades tuberculosis was almost eradicated so Tubfrim modified its aim to that of improving health care facilities for handicapped children and youth. Today, cases of tuberculosis are on the increase and Tubfrim profits are again being used to finance research into and prevention of the disease.
Please never throw away canceled stamps. Just cut or tear the stamps off the envelopes, leaving a slight margin (approx. 1/2 inch) to keep the perforation intact. Drop your stamps in the box located in the lobby by the bulletin board. For more information, go to www.tubfrim.no . A wonderful opportunity for all the women of St. John's to participate in Women of the ELCA (WELCA), even though you may not be a member of a specific Circle, is to shop for a "Tear Strip" item that is needed for the Lutheran World Relief Kits (Health, Sewing, Midwife, School, Aids/Hospice Kits and Layettes). These items may be placed in the box in the Library/Lounge or dropped off in the Do-Day storage room. Let's all help out to support these much needed kits used by Lutheran World Relief. There have already been some items put in the Do Day storage room for the kits made by Circle members. All Circles are welcome to use any of the items you find there, for the kits your circle is making.
Thank you from WELCA
Thank you for supporting the Bible and Cell Phone Recycling Projects. This is an update on what has been shipped so far this year: 40 Bibles, 11 New Testaments, several other devotional books and 21 cell phones and accessories.
We will continue collecting these items and thank you very much for your support.
Reminder: when saving stamps, leave a slight margin (approx. 1/2 inch) to keep the perforation intact.
Switch to Hospice Kits! The Global Health Ministries warehouse has a good supply of Midwife Kits in stock at the moment, but has a special need for AIDS/Hospice Kits that will go to those patients suffering from the symptoms of this disease in Tanzania. These kits provide cleanliness, comfort and hope. For a full list of needed items go to http://www.ghm.org/resources/hands-on/hospicekit.html
![]() WELCA is beginning two new Recycling Projects for the year 2009 and we would appreciate the help of all the members of the congregation to fulfill these projects.
1. The Women of the ELCA have teamed up with the Women's Funding Network and the Good Deed Foundation to Recycle 250,000 cell phones by May 1, 2009! Money raised through the recycling campaign will be used to: a. Support programs that lift women and families out of poverty; b. Help provide lasting solutions to climate change, a major contributor to poverty worldwide; and c. Provide 911 emergency phones for senior citizens and people at risk.
In the United States alone, more than half a billion cell phones are no longer being used and are ready for recycling, and another 11 million phones are added to that total every month! There will be a Collection Box in the foyer the first Sunday in January to deposit your old cell phone (which is deactivated and deprogrammed) all accessories are welcome also. The box will be picked up by Fed X when filled.
2. WELCA is also collecting old and used Bibles, this project is called 'BIBLES' For Hungry Hearts Around the Worlds. These will be distributed to those who have none. There will be a Collection Box in the foyer the first Sunday in January to deposit your used Bibles or Testaments. Even if there are pages missing, they will be able to make use of them. The Bibles will be taken to the May WELCA Cluster Meeting.
Thank you for you cooperation in these projects that we can help someone to have a better life.
