St. John's Lutheran Church

June 7, 2010 - 7:00 p.m.

 

Members Present:  Nathan Summerside, Ed Utesch, Mark Bohner, Kay Allen, Kathy Stelzer,  Iris Hemmingson, Karen Breuer, Elvira Nielsen.

 

MINUTES - approved.

 

THANK YOU'S  received from: Church of Damascus Road, Lutheran Bible Translators, Mid-East Development.

 

CHURCH OF THE DAMASCUS ROAD GOLF OUTING:  St. John's has been invited - It will be held in Fort Dodge on June 19th.

 

LUTHERAN MID-EAST DEVELOPMENT:  We will contact them to invite them to speak at St. John's any date they have available.

 

CHURCH OF THE DAMASCUS ROAD:  July 10-11 the Juhl's will host a Music Fest to raise money for the Church of the Damascus Road.

 

JOHN LAMONTE:  The missionary we formerly sponsored is asking for prayers for his mother-in-law who lives in Hong Kong with John.

 

RELAY FOR LIFE:  On the 19th, 20th 26th & 27th of June we will have a sign up table to take donations and sell luminaries.  Members signed up to man the tables.  The relay is July 9th & 10th.  Members can sign up to walk as well.

 

CONTRIBUTIONS: 

CSADV          $153 - May

Mid- Sioux        $76 -  May

 

HAITI PROJECT: July 25th, a meeting of the Greater Plymouth County Conference will be held at St. John's.  Pastor has asked Kathy to present the report of her visit to Haiti and the orphanage there.  This would be a mission opportunity for the group.  The group will include the leadership representatives as well as the general membership.  Fellowship will follow the meeting.

 

EQUAL EXCHANGE:  There is still coffee, nuts, chocolate, etc. to purchase.

 

MISSION SUPPORT:  Designated contributions are not considered benevolence support by the ELCA.

Members Present:  Iris Hemmingson, Elvira Nielsen, Joan Severson, Mark Bohner, Ed Utesch, Kathy Stelzer,  Nathan Summerside, Kay Allen, Pastor Gary.

 

MINUTES were reviewed and approved.

 

THANK YOU'S:  Reviewed the various thank you's from the organizations that received donations from St. John's.

 

HAITI REPORT: Kathy Stelzer presented her slides on her visit to the Lutheran Orphanage in Haiti.  She will share her experiences with the congregation at some future date.

 

RELAY FOR LIFE:  The team will hold a Rummage Sale May 7th & 8th.  They asked for donations from St. John's.  The sale will be held at O'Toole Park.  The Relay will be the 9th & 10th of July in Remsen.  Will put information in the June Newsletter.

 

MID-EAST DEVELOPMENT:  Pastor Gary has attempted to contact them with no luck but we are planning on them coming this summer.

 

CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN TANZANIA: Tanzania Crops are being planted.  They are refurbishing buildings.  Classes are planned for students, perhaps this fall.  Iris said the project will need additional funds to continue the projects.  The school will be educating approximately 360 students.

 

ELCA CHURCH REPORT:  Pastor Gary reported the ELCA issues that have divided the church - the loss of 6 congregations and some of the problems that lay ahead.

 

BETHLEHEM SCHOOL: The school we support made the paraments for Pastor Gary's home church that were donated from his mother's memorials.

 

GROCERY CART:  "May Flours" - flour, baking supplies, etc.

 

REQUEST FOR FUNDS: Bread for Life - denied

Lutheran Campus Ministry - will be given later this year

Siouxland Food Bank - denied

MINUTES were reviewed and approved.

 

THANK YOU'S:  Received from: ELCA Disaster Relief, Western IA Synod Well Project, Lutheran Mid-East Development, Bread for the World, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Bible Translators.

 

HAITI PROJECT: We have raised over $2,200.

 

LENTEN SUPPERS: The money set aside for LWR - in hopes of matching funds will not be matched due to the on-going reorganization process of Thrivent.  The money we raised will be sent.

 

RELAY FOR LIFE:  We will discuss plans in May.

 

OFFERING RECOMMENDATIONS:  The Council approved our recommendations.

 

MID-SIOUX AND CSADV:  Approximate donations: $40 - Mid-Sioux & $250 - CSADV.

 

MEETING TIMES:  The council is still deliberating  the decision to have all committees meet on one evening.

 

GROCERY CART:  Emphasis for April is "April Showers" - cleaning supplies.

 

NEXT MEETING: - May 3rd, 7:00 PM  - Youth Room.
