Library Committee

May 4, 2010

Members present:  Deb Anderson, Donna Heeren, Delana Ihrke, Chris Knapp, Jan Schietzelt, Pat Winter

Next meeting:  September 14, 2010, 9:00 a.m.   We will start library work at 8:30 a.m. and break at 9:00 a.m. for the business meeting.

Scheduled workdays:  May 11, 2010; May 25, 2010; September 7, 2010.  All workdays will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Note meeting change:  We will be changing our meeting day to the second Tuesday of the month instead of the first Tuesday beginning in the fall.  The first Tuesday and other Tuesdays as deemed necessary will be used as workdays if needed.

Library Open House was very successful.  We should continue to schedule this event on a Sunday where there is no adult Sunday school, or perhaps suggest they have a shortened Sunday school class and then invite them to come to the Open House.

We have a new Bible Dictionary in the library.  This dictionary has pictures, maps, pronunciations and definitions.  Look for it on the shelf if you need help with a reading.

Shelves need to be read before we start back up in the fall.

We discussed having a used book sale.  We will put books and videos we have withdrawn from the library on a table in the lobby and ask for a freewill donation.  A box for donations will be placed on the table.

Good Samaritan would love to have us continue to bring books for their residents to read.  We will pick up what's out there today and bring new books as soon as we have the shelves read.

The book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson has been suggested to us for the library.  Ashley was required to read this book at Wartburg.  Chris will check to see if she still has it.  If so, it will be donated.  If not, we will purchase it next time we buy books.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Knapp, Secretary

Members present: Deb Anderson, Donna Heeren, Delana Ihrke, Chris Knapp, Kay Peters, Jan Schietzelt

Members absent:  Pat Winter

Next meeting:  May 1, 2010, 9:00 am.

Library Open House will be held this coming Sunday, April 18th, between church services.  Kay brought plates and napkins.  We'll use Styrofoam cups from the kitchen for coffee and juice.  Chris will bring the juice.  Yvonne Law will start the coffee for us so it will be ready to go at 9:15 am.  Deb will bring mini muffins.  Donna and Jan will provide doughnut holes.  Loni will bring homemade candies.  Members available to be present are Loni, Donna and Chris.  Chris will make a few signs to place in the lobby.  We will wear our Library Sunday t-shirts.

We will be moving our official library meeting date to the second Tuesday of the month beginning in the fall.  This will better accommodate Loni who has city council meetings on the first Tuesday of the month.  If we need additional workdays, we will continue to use the first Tuesday of the month for that purpose.

We will begin reading and rearranging shelves next month, May 1st.  We wish to have this completed before we break for the summer.

In an effort to make more room on our shelves, we have pulled and will withdraw from our library the little "Love Inspired" books.  Chris made a motion to donate these books to Willow Creek Senior Living.  Donna seconded the motion.  All were in favor.  These books were donated to us by a member over the course of a few years.

WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group is having a "Church Library Contest" where they are giving away over 150 books with a $2,000.00 value.  They will pick one church each month for five months.  Kay put our name in for this.

Past due cards need to be sent before we break for the summer.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Knapp, Secretary

Members absent:  Pat Winter, Tina McMurray

Next meeting:  April 6, 2010, 9:00 am.  We'll begin library work at 8:30 am and break at 9:00 am for the business meeting.

Library Sunday was once again a success.  We sold 146 items for a total in sales of $1,556.64.  98 of the 146 items were books added to the shelves.  18 DVD's have been added as well.  We continue to be grateful to the congregation for their continued support of the library ministry.

Library committee will start wearing our matching t-shirts when we work in the library.  That way, when someone stops by the door, they will know they are welcome to come in while we are working.

Kay will check with Good Samaritan to make sure they are still interested in having us bring library books out.  Since we started this ministry, they have increased their own book collection available to the residents.  We will be happy to continue bringing them books so long as they believe their residents are reading them.   We will also prepare a "missing book" list to give to the activities director at Good Samaritan.

Past due cards need to be sent out.

Library committee will serve the Lenten supper with the Youth committee on March 3rd.  Chris will pick up chips and chicken salad from Fareway.  Deb, Loni and Kay will make bars; Donna and Jan will provide the salads.  We will meet at 4:00 pm to begin setting up.

Library Open House will be held April 18th.  We will serve mini muffins, candies, juice and coffee.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Knapp, Secretary
