St. John's Lutheran Church Education Team Meeting May 25, 2010
Present: Joan Kroepel, Jan Schietzelt, Lisa Chihak, Carol Hallberg, Roma Lancaster, Pastor Greg.
Lisa talked about the teachers' meeting held last week. The teachers all seemed to prefer the Witness material. Several teachers have agreed to return next year.
Carol had numbers for past attendance in Sunday School and also possible numbers for next year's classes. There was a discussion about the possibility of requiring 7th and 8th graders to come to Sunday School as part of confirmation requirements. We felt that it would be helpful for those kids to become more familiar with the Bible and with the church in general and all the other kids in their class. We decided to discuss this with Kay Michaelson, as head of confirmation, and see if we could implement this in the future.
Carol reviewed with the committee some of the plans that are going on for some summertime activities. The theme of "Hands and Prayer" for one and the "Love" theme for another. Carol and Lisa are looking at a weekday morning in July for these activities. Pastor Greg also mentioned maybe the kids that come to this could present a skit and/or song on the following Sunday morning. Tentative plans for July 8th event with presenting something at the July 11th service.
Plans seem to be in order for Bible School. There will be a teacher's meeting and meal after late service on June 6th.
St. John's Lutheran Church Education Team Meeting April 13, 2010
Members present: Joan Kroepel, Pastor Greg, Jeanette Davis, Roma Lancaster, Mary Roder, Carol Hallberg
The Good Friday kids event went well. Approximately 25 kids were in attendance. Suggestions for next year: Could try doing the stations of the cross but liturgy may be hard for some younger children to understand. Holy week eggs took longer than expected to put together. Hot cross buns could be replaced with pretzels.
April 25 is the next intergenerational event - Kay will be in charge of this event as Kristy is out of town. The Committee is asked to help with setup and cleanup.
May 16 is teacher evaluation meeting during 9:30 hour - Committee asked to bring a baked good. Evaluations of the Akaloo and Witness programs will be completed and discussed by the group. Akaloo is a more expensive program and it may be recommended for only grades 7 - 12 for next year and keep Witness for grades PreK - 6th. Evaluation of memory work is also needed. It was discussed that memory work may need to be kept more simple and repeated more often. Pastor Greg suggested that maybe memory work could be recited along with music during a service.
VBS - Some guides and adults are still needed. Dates are June 7 - 11 Dick Schietzelt has made crosses to hand out on Sunday of VBS Jane Schultz is working on some artwork for use throughout the week. Tear strips for items needed are ready to put out. Joan is working on the Friday (Easter) script.
Summer Sunday School sessions - Lisa has some ideas, but was not present. Ideas were tabled until May 25 meeting.
Our next meeting will be postponed by one week to May 25. Carol has a conflict for our regular meeting night and this will give Carol and Lisa more time to go over teacher evaluations from the 16th.
We will not be meeting in July.

VBS - Joan and Jan still looking for final helpers. Jane Schultz attended at Pastor Greg's request and presented the team with her sketches of Holy Week drawings to be used for VBS. The team liked her sketches and she will finish remaining days and they will be posted on an easel to use each day of VBS.
Lenten supper - March 17 - be prepared to serve by 5:00. All team members to bring bars. Lasagna, salad, French bread, beverage and bars will be served to an estimated 100 people. Mary will pick up lasagna from Joan's house and start them by 3:00. Jan will bring bread.
Confirmation rehearsal, March 24 - ice cream sundaes will be served to confirmation class, parents, guides and prayer partners. Joan will pick up ice cream, everyone should bring a variety of toppings. Juice, water and coffee will also be served Sundaes will be served immediately following the Lenten service
Easter 10:00 service - We only had 3 kids respond that they will be able to help with this service, so the team decided to not have them contribute to the service this year. Catechism kids are helping with the Maundy Thursday meal. Lisa reported that plans are coming along well for the Good Friday kids event which will be held for 3 yr. olds - 5th grades. Lisa will put this in the newsletter, bulletin and Joan will put in the paper. It was suggested that a videographer could be used for this event
Sunday School - There has been a good response on the Witness and Akaloo curriculum by teachers. Attendance has been dropping some since Christmas. Carol suggested that cards be sent out to families that have not been attending regularly. Joan will send out cards and is looking for someone to help with this project.
