Education Team Meeting St. John's Lutheran Church November 15, 2011
Members present: Erika Dreckman, Joan Kroepel, Carol Hallberg, June Mikkelson, Jan S, Roma L, Greg Gabriel
Visited by Forward Planning representative 1. 2 areas of concern are loving relationships and empowering leadership 2. Please keep in mind ways to continue or increase work along these lines 3. Suggestion was made to have a St. John's facebook page a. This will already be going to the technology team at the next meeting
Pastor Greg led devotions based on Acts 4
Minutes shared and approved
Concern - Do we have the appropriate Bibles for Kindergarten? Carol and Lisa will follow up with Mary Roder
Reformation report - Flannel graph worked well with younger students, booklets went home with students, adult class visited with members of area Catholic church in sharing info and viewpoints. Possible red ribbons for children next year?
Akaloo books - We still have an inventory. Some committee members felt that the children in the lower grades might like them, some members felt that their classes did not like them when using them. Carol will take to classes and offer to interested students, remainder can be put on "free" table
Bible Adventures - approximately 10 children attended the class on how to use your Bible. The next class is on January 15 and will be a snow adventure.
Christmas gifts to students - We will continue this. If there is not $ in this line item in the budget, there are unspent $ from other areas. Teachers will choose an item for their classes with a $2 limit suggested. June will coordinate catalog orders. Email will be sent to teachers to please choose an item by 11/27 so that they can be ordered and received in time for Christmas.
Carol will ask Kim to send members an updated report on the Education expenses with line items.
Program on prescription drug abuse - 1. Focus of Sunday School is Bible Stories 2. There are enough Sundays in Jan-May to cover curriculum lessons, have one intergenerational event, and have one Sunday devoted to this topic if presented with Bible connection, perhaps "body as temple". 3. We need to contact Jay King and ask him to come in March. We would be asking for two 20 minute presentations - one for older students (7-12?) and one for younger students (3-6) 4. We will develop a Bible based lesson to go with this presentation for teachers to use with their classes in the time that Jay is not meeting with them. 5. We would like to do this in March, felt it would be good to have the info out before prom time.
We tabled the discussion on when to start the Sunday School year next fall.
We need new members, and will be needing a new chair. We will put the word out in the announcements.
Meeting adjourned
Education Team Meeting St. John's Lutheran Church October 18, 2011
Members present: Pastor Greg, Jeanette Davis, Roma Lancaster, Joan Kroepel, June Mikkelson, Mary Roder
Devotions were led by Pastor Greg. The message was "stop gawking and get going".
Discussion of Sunday School starting before Labor Day was addressed. The high school class teacher would rather not start until after Labor Day believing that it discouraged attendance. The committee decided to discuss this again when Carol and Lisa could be present.
Carol's email to the committee was discussed and we also decided to discuss this when Carol could be present.
The Martin Luther books that were purchased with memorial dollars were reviewed by the committee. We would be in favor of sending them home with the students on Reformation Sunday because of the activities in them. This would be our recommendation for Carol and Lisa, but the ultimate decision to either keep them or send them home is theirs.
Bible Adventures progress was reviewed by June. The FROG theme of Daniel and the Lion's Den from September went very well with 15 kids and 6 adults present. The kids dressed in costumes and role played the Bible story. The ages for this event was 4 yrs - 6th grade. November 3rd is the next event. June has the year planned out already.
Mary addressed her concerns about her kindergarten class needing more age-appropriate Bibles. The brand new Bibles in her classroom are meant for 3rd grade or up level. She will discuss this with Carol and Lisa to see if there are other Bibles available in the Resource Room.
Sunday School Christmas gifts were discussed. The plan may have been to give old Akaloo books to students and the committee wants to re-think this and possibly do something else as gifts. Joan will check with Jan Schietzelt and see what we have done in the past and also with Carol and Lisa.
Respectfully submitted by,
Mary Roder
