 JANUARY 29 - FEBRUARY 4, 2012

                         Welcome to worship.
It's a privilege to "give thanks to the LORD with [our] whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation" (Psalm 111:1, NRSV)

PRAYER REQUEST CARDS:  In the lobby you will find a "Prayer Box" and Prayer Request Cards.  If you have a special request for prayer, fill one out, place it in the offering plate or place it in the box and we will offer prayers for you.  Remember one of the most powerful acts you can do for your brother or sister in Christ is to take their cause before the Lord in prayer.

RADIO AD SPONSOR:  In appreciation by Lorna Siege

NOISY OFFERING is this weekend!  All proceeds are designated for Grace Orphanage in Haiti.  Be sure to bring your loose change for this worthy cause!!

Adult Sunday School will not meet on January 29 or February 5 but please join the Intergenerational Sunday School on the 5th!

B-2 Adult Sunday School meets each Sunday morning in Room B-2 at 9:30 and is led by Julie Albert and Peg McAllister.

congratuLAtions, Pastor Marcia!  It's time for Pastor Marcia to sit back, relax, and enjoy her grandchildren!  Effective February 26, Pastor Marcia will retire as a Pastor at St. John's.  We will certainly all miss Pastor Marcia but wish her the best in her retirement.  A reception will be held on February 26 from 2 - 4 pm in the church dining room.  If you wish to help with the reception, please contact Kristy Pecks at 540-7093.  If you would like to give a monetary gift, please drop it off at the church office.

Singles fellowship:  All singles are invited to St. John Lutheran in Merrill for a Singles Fellowship Sunday evening, January 29th, starting at 7 pm.  St. John is located at 735 5th St. in Merrill.  All ages are invited.

9th GRADE STUDENTS:  This Sunday afternoon, January 29th, from 3:00 - 7:15, at the Baymont Inn, is your 9th grade confirmation planning retreat and your attendance is mandatory.  Students should bring their swimming suits and a towel if they wish to swim.  Supper will be served.

9th GRADERS' PARENTS:  We are making stoles for your student's Confirmation Day and have started construction.  We'll continue our sewing on Saturday, February 4th, beginning at 9:00 am.  You do not need sewing skills in order to help with this project.  Come and stay as long as you can, or come and go as your schedule allows.

Recharge is coming:  Ingham Okoboji staff will join us on February 4th for a Recharge Event for ages 3rd - 8th grade..3rd - 5th graders will start at 4:00 pm with registration at 3:45 pm.  Please bring a liter of soda!  A pizza supper will be provided to 3rd - 8th at 6:30 pm with registration for 6th - 8th occurring during supper.  Recharge will for 6th - 8th will start at 7 pm and end at 11 pm.  Please bring a bag of munchies.  Please sign up on the bulletin board or call the church office, 546-8855, if you plan to attend.

Bible Camp Weekend is February 4 & 5.  Counselors from Ingham Okoboji Bible Camp will speak to us about Bible Camp opportunities in the coming year.  There are 3 ways to save when sending your child to camp:  1) St. John's Youth Team will be offering $100.00 camperships to members of St. John's, 2) Member Church Discount - save $15.00, 3) Register before March 15 to receive the early bird rates.

INTERGENERATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL:  I really could use So-and-So's advice!  If I only knew then what I know now!  Have you ever found yourself saying that?  Do you know of someone that has just the right thing to say or best piece of advice?  Where do they gain such wisdom and how do we get a hold of it?  Since all wisdom comes from God, we should turn to the B-I-B-L-E!  Join us for a special Intergenerational Sunday school Sunday, February 5 @ 9:30 a.m. in the Dining Room to dig into the Book of Proverbs, aka a Book of Wisdom.  There will be "brain food" to help make us wise, learning time about the book of Proverbs, and a fun activity that will help Youth and Adults learn from each other!

THE LIBRARY SAYS THANK YOU!!!  THANK YOU to everyone who made purchases or donations to support the St. John's Library last weekend.  We enjoyed visiting with each of you, and the members of the Library Committee will be busy for several weeks adding new books and movies to the shelves.  Keep your eye on the New Book shelf and on the new DVDs.  We were able to add about a dozen new family movies to the collection...perfect for a cold January or February evening.  Your support of the St. John's Library speaks "volumes"!

thanks from our new orleans group!  The Youth Group wishes to thank everyone who came to the Soup Luncheon.  We were able to raise over $590 and Thrivent Choice matched with an additional $500.  Thanks again for your support.

SATURDAY LECTORS NEEDEd!  We are very short of lectors for Saturday night service.  If you are not on our Saturday night lector list but would be willing to read the scriptures, please call the church at 546-8855 or email Kristy@stjohnslemarsia.org

Help feed Haiti children!  For the first time, St. John's will be packaging food to send to Haiti!  On February 22nd, Ash Wednesday, from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm, we will need 25 - 40 volunteers for each hour!  Our Catechism Youth will participate in the last 3 hours, 5 - 8 pm, but we will need your help to fill the many slots available!!  We want everyone that wants to work to be able to do so.  Obviously without workers we have no event.  Therefore, we are asking those that are able to donate to the cost of the event to do so, and St. John's will use matching funds to scholarship those who can give of their time but may not be able to donate monetarily. The total cost of the event is estimated to be $4000 - $6000.

  •        $4000 Minimum would be - $20/hour/person for an 8 hour event with an average of 25 workers/hr.

  •        $6400 Maximum would be - $20/hour/person for an 8 hour event with an average of 40 workers/hr.

This would give us 25,000 - 50,000+ meals.  30 orphans x 3 meals/day x 365 days = 32,850 meals which would feed the children of Grace Orphanage for the entire year.  Please call the church office, 546-8855, to schedule a time! Invite your friends to help!  More information will be coming or you can contact Kathy Stelzer at 540-0656.

HAVE YOU LOST AN ITEM?  Please check out the table near the Resource Room with items left at church this past year. Any items not picked up by end of January will be disposed of.
